In Tabletop Games N Is for…
Narrator
In some tabletop role-playing games, the “Narrator” is the individual responsible for guiding the story, describing scenes, and controlling non-player characters. Similar to a Dungeon Master or Game Master, the Narrator facilitates the game’s flow, ensuring that players remain engaged and the narrative progresses smoothly. Their role is pivotal in creating an immersive and cohesive storytelling experience.
Natural 20
Rolling a “Natural 20” occurs when a player rolls a 20 on a 20-sided die (d20) without any modifiers. This is often celebrated as a critical success, leading to exceptionally favourable outcomes, such as dealing extra damage in combat or achieving outstanding feats. The excitement of rolling a Natural 20 adds a thrilling element to gameplay, embodying the unpredictability and excitement inherent in tabletop adventures.
Nerf, Nerfed, Nerfing
Originating from the use of “Nerf” as a brand of soft foam toys, in gaming parlance, to “nerf” means to weaken or reduce the effectiveness of a game element. When a character, ability, or item is “nerfed,” it undergoes adjustments to balance gameplay, often in response to it being overpowered. This process, known as “nerfing,” ensures a fair and enjoyable experience for all players, maintaining the game’s integrity and challenge.
Non-Player Character (NPC)
NPCs are any characters controlled by the GM. They might be shopkeepers, quest givers, or terrifying villains. Some serve as allies or rivals to the players, while others are just there to make the world feel alive. A well-developed NPC can make a campaign feel immersive and unpredictable.
